The Immigrant
Experience:How They Came to America (1890 to 1950)
Presented by Tom Sadauskas
Every family with immigrant ancestors has stories of how
their family first arrived in America. Many of these stories
contain grains of truth as well as unsubstantiated myths.
This presentation looks at the immigration process that our
ancestors went through to come here to America.
Tom Sadauskas has been actively conducting genealogy
research since 2000, primarily focused on researching his
Lithuanian ancestry. All four of his grandparents and his
father were born in Lithuania. He has made several trips to
Lithuania and Germany to conduct genealogy research and has
been successful in reestablishing contact with relatives in
Lithuania as well as making contact with newly uncovered
ones. Tom was part of the first group of genealogists to
visit the International Tracing Service (ITS) archives in
May 2008 following the opening of the archives to public
access. The ITS archives hold 50 million records on 17.5
million individuals (i.e., Jewish Holocaust victims and
survivors as well as 11 million WW II displaced
persons (DPs). He is a 2008 graduate of the National
Institute on Genealogical Research (NIGR) and has been a
speaker at several genealogical conferences, including the
2009 conference of the Polish Genealogical Society of
Connecticut and the Northeast.
